High-speed wireless computing networks are now economically feasible for home users, via 802.11b wireless protocols and their associated hardware. Such centralized "point-to-multipoint" installations typically allow a range of about 100 meters from the central access point. It is possible to use the same network protocols and hardware to construct a "wireless mesh" or "multipoint-to-multipoint" network in which any connected node can communicate directly or indirectly with any other connected node. The research project described in this article applies wireless mesh networking to inter-vehicular communication.

The update of car Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) is a growing trend that transforms software‑related recalls into mere updates, thus considerably reducing the cost of recalls for car manufacturers, while increasing driver safety in quasi‑real‑time. However, the number and data volume of FOTA updates is expected to increase exponentially with the steep increase in the number of processors per vehicle, combined with the increase in the number of connected and electric vehicles that is projected to be 69 million new connected vehicles in Europe by 2025. Multiplied by the increasing cost of mobile data subscriptions, this leads to the paradox that by 2030 or even before that, it may be more costly to update vehicles than to move them if FOTA is only relying on mobile network communication (be it LTE/4G or 5G).

A WiFi Mesh works like a second router, creating another access point within the original WiFi network. Thus, a set of multiple mesh devices or a WiFi Mesh System works like one single network connection – enabling the same speed and quality of connection in areas installed with the devices. And since a mesh node already widens the coverage of the already-existing WiFi network, you don’t need to manually connect your device to it. In general, the more WiFi Mesh devices installed inside your home, the more stable your connection would be, even in areas that used to be dead spots.

Individuals engage in daily behaviours that are often at issue with self-interest and rationality. This paper supports the thesis of inadequacy of the homo oeconomicus model, providing results of a field experiment conducted in the city of Naples (Italy) on the practice of “suspended coffee” (caffè sospeso). The suspended coffee tradition was initially launched in Naples and consists in people purchasing two coffees, one to drink on the spot and one to be left “suspended” for someone else to drink for free. A convenience sample of café clients completed a self-administered questionnaire. Their answers were examined in relation to the declared choice and consequent purchase of a suspended coffee.

The Banshee was equipped with QinetiQ’s Airborne Command and Control for Swarm Interoperable Missions (ACCSIOM) technology, which allows the drone to communicate with the crewed aircraft using the same messaging format as the standard NATO Link 16 datalink. Instrumental to the deployment of autonomous air platforms, the technology provides an airborne gateway which can receive and translate both long range and short range communications between drones while in-built safety systems can override the autonomy to ensure the drone stays at all times within a safe operating area.

We show that achievable throughput remains close to its maximum even for high levels of offered load per vehicle or high density of vehicles, so congestion control mechanisms in mesh networks can effectively prevent throughput from collapsing as these factors increase over time. This achievable throughput can be increased with the deployment of additional roadside infrastructure that serves as a gateway to the Internet, although the throughput gain per gateway decreases as more are added. Deploying these gateways is cost-effective, i.e. economic benefits of the resulting throughput exceed costs of infrastructure, when vehicle density is sufficiently high. We also find that use of RTS/CTS decreases achievable throughput in this scenario.

Comme le rapporte l'OCDE, l'utilisation des données mobiles par abonnement dans les 35 pays membres de l'organisation a bondi de 79 % sur la période 2018-2021. Le volume données consommées mensuellement s'élève en moyenne à 8,4 Go par abonnement, mais varie fortement selon les pays. C'est la Finlande qui arrive en tête, avec une consommation d'environ 37 Go par mois et par abonnement.
